You'll find it very hard to get work because most places who actually higher underage people only go as low as 15 years. Will babysitting, helping at a church, or volunteering at an animal shelter count for hours? I can't think of any other way you would be able to work unless you have a manager/friend/parent who is willing to hire you. I'm sorry. I'm no help :(

About Employers in Sacramento area besides State work

Employers in Sacramento area besides State work?
I am a State worker in Sacramento who is curious to know if there are other major employers in this area and what skills/education I would need to apply for well-paying jobs with them. Are there any emerging job markets in this area (i.e. green jobs)? I want to keep my job options open.

There are thousands of employers in the Sacramento area that are not State or Federal. There are Corporate and Sole Proprietorship options available. You need to determine what your skills are and what field they are best applied in. Then contact companies in those fields to apply for any jobs that you could qualify for.

About Are you glad you became a lawyer? Anyone work for the gov. in Sacramento, CA

Are you glad you became a lawyer? Anyone work for the gov. in Sacramento, CA?
I graduate soon and am thinking about becoming a lawyer. People tell me I would be good at it because I write well, like to develop arguments, am articulate, and think outside the box (according to them). However, I'm also kind of shy, and am not really competitive or aggressive. And, I do want to have a family and a life outside of work. If I went into law, I would probably work for Sacramento County or the state. How are these jobs? Is it easy to get a job? Are they less stressful/demanding than private practice? Are they enjoyable? What kind of characteristics are necessary for success? Are you glad you went into law? Is a J.D. good for any other profession? How could I avoid the courtroom? My alternative is to become a guide dog trainer. Sounds more appealing to me, but I thought the money would make law worth it, and the guide dog program offered in an area I don't want to move to. Thoughts?

Well I am not a lawyer, but my sister is one. My sister is my best friend and were very close. Any way's she has been a lawyer for 15 years now. She has said many times that it is very stressful. Often times she has to take work home with her so many of her evenings and weekends have been shot because of that. Another problem she has is vacation time. Every time she plans on a vacation she has a case to present in court. It has really taken a toll on her health at times. She gets so warn out from working 24/7 for weeks on end that her system just cant handle it. She does like being a lawyer, she said like any job it has its good times and bad. But it is very demanding, very long hours and stressful.
2 :
Well I have been a lawyer for nearly 30 years, in other words I am very capable of describing the profession. The sad thing is that to be realistic law has become "The Great Paper Wars". Honor has left the profession. I used to love law, and yes your first few cases will be exciting. You will love it, yet as time moves on you will see a lot of crap in the system. Trust me, it may offer less money, but by being a guide dog trainer it sounds like you will be happy. Do what you love. To answer all of your questions directly here goes. When I started I practiced in San Francisco I immediately went into private practice, as opposed to working for a firm in which you would do all the grunt work. In private practice I had the freedom to think, analyze, and argue my position without having a superior not find my work acceptable. As for how stressful private practice is, sometimes I feel as if I am inundated with work. I only operate with 2 secretaries and a partner, so I receive the bulk of the Paper Wars myself. Last weekend while preparing for trial, I had to write 18 motions, simply because the opposing large law firm can manage this kind of output. And this is where the sleezy element comes in. That law firm is just trying to work me to death until I get sued for malpractice (sounds dog-eat-dog). Yet it has its advantages; if the pursuit of truth and justice is your thing, you will like the profession even with all the baggage.
3 :
I make $350,000 a year and I'm miserable. The money isn't worth it. I went to Harvard, graduated with honors, passed the Bar on the first try, for what? I spend my days formulating arguments to keep the most disgusting excuses for human beings I have ever had the misfortune of meeting out of jail.
4 :
Don't go to law school if your heart isn't in it. You won't succeed if it's not what you truely desire. I know plenty of classmates of mine who were kicked out, but they were there for the wrong reasons. Committing to law school on a whim is not going to get you anywhere. It takes more than skills to get through. You have to have focus, stamina and be like a lazer. You speak of dog training more passionately than you do about a prospective legal career.

Where can ex-cons/felons find work in Sacramento, CA?
My BF has been out of prison for 2 years and is having a very hard time finding employment. Every job he has had since his release has been temporary and his being unemployed is causing us to be really behind in bills, etc. Do you have any suggestions where he may be able to find work in Sacramento, Ca? He is young and a very good worker. He is in the process of obtaing his CDL and also is a certified forklift operator. If you have any suggestions where he can apply that may not trip off his previous record, we would greatly appreciate it, he is open to anything. Thanks alot!

Has he tried hooking up with a temp agency? Unfortunately there are so many people out there looking for work he may gte passed up by someone who doesn't have a record. Tell him to be persistent and show employers he wants to work, someone will see his enthusiasm and hire him. Good luck.

About Costume/Theater work in Sacramento

Costume/Theater work in Sacramento?
I'm new to the city and have a BFA in costume design. I have no contacts here and am having a hard time finding Theatrical costume shops. Are there theaters here that have their own costume shop that I can drop my resume with, or is there a network of local Theaters that I can get in contact with? Is there a Costume shop union? Anything to point me in the right direction would be wonderful, Thanks!

you are too young to be legally hired by employers; you will have to settle fro work in your neighborhood - help the elderly with their yardwork and small chores and that type of thing..at 15 1/2 you can get a work permit from your school and try to apply locally with businesses that are hiring

There are places that are hiring. Take a look at the Sunday newspaper. Also look at http://www.craigslist and http://www.careerbuilder.com.
2 :
Good luck. I FINALLY got a job after a year of looking. I have a solid resume and I struggled to find a job. If you don't have a degree you will struggle. My suggestion is to apply for anything you have the slightest chance at qualifying for. Look for part time jobs and be willing to sacrifice what you think your ideal salary is. Try craigslist, Monster, Hotjobs, carrer builder and the Bee. Shoot your resume out to any place you can. Try and find a job fast because the longer you are out of work the harder it will be for you to find work.
3 :
I am kind of thinking that Pinky may have been to picky. I was laid off on September 2nd, and started working at a new job on September 29th. There are jobs out there, you just have to be willing to sacrifice. I am currently making about $16,000 less a year than my old job, but still making more than unemployment. Good luck to you.
4 :
Good Day Sacramento (KMAX-TV) has these convention things where you go make a video resume, a paper resume, and a profile on the internet with both resumes all for free. All this information is then accessible by potential employers and you have a chance of getting hired. The next event is at: The Folsom Telegraph Wednesday, March 11, 2009 5-10 a.m. 12755 Folsom Blvd. Folsom, CA 95630 But why only use one resource like this...look at Monster, Career Builder, etc.
5 :
Lots of places are hiring in Sacramento but yeah like everyone above stated you need a good resume. I dont no what type of job your looking for but these are the places i always see hiring. KHOLS SEARS WALMART MACYS TARGET Sorry thats all i can think of at the top of my head i always see hiring signs there. Good luck

Any work you do and earn money is a Job. Your options are limited because the job market is flooded with applicants. Time to be inventive, My suggestions to you: Make up fliers and pass them around in your neighborhood. Offer to do whatever work it is you want to do, such as : Computer work, Babysit, Clean Garages, Organize Cupboards, File Papers, Wash Cars, Mow Lawns, Pull Weeds, Tutor the neighbors kids, wash Dogs, Dog sit, Clean the Pool, Assist the elderly, whatever... Post first whatever it is you want to do or are good at ... However, You should keep your options open and make a decision after the persons call you instead of not giving them many reasons to call. Your neighbors who might hire you do not have to be residents, they might be local businesses that need a little job done. Do not be afraid to ask and apply. You won't get a job if you don't try.
7 :
Nah, a majority of jobs are usually scams in Sacramento. I have applied like crazy during this economic depression and found nothing. There might be a silver lining because on Wednesday, March 11th from 10 a.m.--2 p.m. there will be a job fair held at the Scottish Rite Temple located at 6151 H Street. It will be held tomorrow. There is no guarantee you will find a job but it doesn't hurt to try them out.

Fantastic place to raise a family. Very good place if you are a couple w/o kids and are active and enjoy the outdoors. Not too good of a place if you are young and single, its a little slow for that. 2 hours from Tahoe, Reno, San Francisco and the coast. 4 hours from Yosemite and Monterey Bay. Plenty of jobs but only if you are well networked, not like SF bay area or So Cal.
2 :
Fine. Rather boring, though.
3 :
The best job in Sac is probably an engineer or Doctor (EMT etc)
4 :
It's a lot better than a lot of other places I know of (and I suspect a lot of places of similar size that I know little or nothing of). The steadiest jobs are government at all levels (city, county, state, fed). There's a decent mix of high tech and light manufacturing and retail, too. Some of the nicer areas and surrounding 'burbs & commutes include: McKinley Park, East Sac/River Park, Land Park, So. Land Park, Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Roseville, Folsom, & Davis. There's decent bus & rail transit if you wanna get out of your car. Great biking and hiking along the beautiful American River Parkway and river recreation on the American & Sac rivers. Mild climate most of the year. I suppose it may not be the most "exciting" place, esp if you're young, single & seeking diversity, variety, bohemian "culture" and the like. But it's an easy commute by car or Amtrak to SF & the rest of the Bay Area and other attractions like Tahoe, the wine country and the redwoods.

I live and work in Ohio, but I doubt work furloughs are not different in other areas. In Ohio, it means you will sleep inside a facility, go to work during the work week ( Monday through Friday), be strip searched each day as you return to the facility after work and you are held VERY accountable for your time and your condition when you return. If you miss your bus, get side tracked, stop for a beer, you are violated and you will do your 180 days sitting in a cell instead. Over the weekends, you will remain inside the facility. Best of luck and I hope this is useful to you

I don't live there, but I'm planning to move there. I did, however, visit there in March. The people are laid back. Also, it's very diverse. If you have a problem with diversity, Sacramento isn't for you. I like it, that's why I'm moving there. However, like any place, you do have your buttholes. But overall, it's a good city. Otherwise, I won't be going through the trouble of getting there.
2 :
I have lived in sacramento my whole life. I like it here, especially the people. The biggest problem with sacramento right now is there is no work, which im sure is true in many other places but many state workers work here and they have been laid off so now they take all the regular jobs up and theres nothing. Small business go well here though, i have many friends who own their own places in downtown sacramento. Another good thing about sacramento is you are only a couple hours away from the ocean and a couple hours away from the snow. There are also lots of beautiful homes in Sac and it doesnt snow, except for a little bit this year but that was a first in 25 yrs. anywho hope that helped.
3 :
If you're into cycling, it rocks. Sacramento has one of the best bike trails in the country! other than that, it sucks here. I hate it. So run down here... living standard is low, too. Seems like all the decent people have moved out to Rocklin, Auburn, Folsom , etc.

If you go south to say Dixon or Vacaville you'll be going to work in the reverse commute direction. just a thought, you wont like the traffic coming out of Sac.

A huge disadvantage to all the locations u mentioned is commute - Elk Grove and South Davis might be easiest to get in and out of the area during traditional work hours. However, I just realized you didn't list what your work shift is. If you have off hours then commute might not matter. If that is the situation, try Fair Oaks, You will like it. Sweet community.

Sacramento is a very nice town. Cute little neighborhoods, good restaurants, etc. But it's just too HOT in the Summer for my tastes. I think if I lived near there I would look to the east. Not far outside Sacramento the road starts climbing into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mtns., California's famous 'Gold Country'. Auburn is only about 35 miles away. Placerville is maybe 45 or 50 miles. Those towns are in the mountains, much cooler, not to mention prettier. Lots of history and 'local color'.
2 :
Midtown is a great place to live. Lots of trees, bars, restaurants and parks. Just don't move to close to the freeway. Many people work for the state. CalPers is rumored to be a great department to work for. They have a nice new building with a good cafeteria.
3 :
You shouldnt have a problem finding a nursing job, from what I understand there is a shortage. As far as living in the area stay out of the south area and Elk Grove which is just south of south Sacramento and the crime is bleeding into the area. Also Natomas is getting a bit ghetto these days. I like Citrus Heights quite a bit, Carmichael is pretty good, Roseville and into Rocklin if you can afford it. Just be aware traffic is getting worse these days. Research the schools around the areas also.
4 :
Land Park, East Sacramento, and Pocket Areas are great. Wonderful schools and great friendly neighborhoods. The prices of homes are down currently and they're much less expensive than in the SF Bay Area. The different suburbs also have good qualities, but I'd avoid Rocklin, Roseville, and Folsom unless you enjoy traffic during commutes. Where are you living now and what are you looking for in a neighborhood? Sacramento has a vast variety of communities within the community. Yes, it gets hot in the summer, but you'll never shovel snow in the winter!
5 :
elk grove is a growing communtiy. now they have new shopping centers, and methodist hospital may have a job for you. commute is not that bad either is you wnat to live in elk grove and work in downtown. all you need to do is carpool with your kids, and have them go to school in downtown. thats what i have been doing for quite a while now. education is excellent, and sutter middle school is the best school in town. california distinguished school. housing in downtown is quite expensive. if anything go for west sac, natomas, or elk grove. plenty of homes. there are also many hospitals in downtown. so, my suggestion: MOVE HERE!!! its great! theres a river for excellent weekend getaways right in downtown, housing can be around 300,000 for brand new homes, your kids will be safe day and night at school and home and have a great education, and im sure there are plenty of job oppurtunites. currently my brother is working as an intern for a doctor so its pretty easy to get a job. you should definitely consider moving here, and i wish you the best of luck. i look forward to having you in my home town!!!!!!!
6 :

Go to Auburn or Grass Valley its a great place to raise a family. My uncle lives there and its really fun to go up to is place and you can always go to the river and he has some acreage so its really fun. Auburn is right next to the freeway so you can get right on and head to Sacramento it only will take around 30-45mins to get there and back

While there are hospitals in Midtown Sacramento, and living in Midtown is fun for young adults, it is not a good environment to raise children in - lots of homelessness, drinking, and rude people. I would suggest Rocklin, Roseville, Loomis, or Auburn. Rocklin and Roseville are very consumer-friendly and upscale towns with two major hospitals nearby. Loomis and Auburn are more rural, but both near hospitals - they are also less hot than Rocklin and Roseville in the summer.
